Compassion is the greatest virtue of the Eastern Buddhism. We know Charity is the great virtue of the Christian Western. Is there any need to choose? Both complement each other. If we must choose, we should go for charity if we could practice it. However compassion is more practical, it is similar because of the gentleness and can lead to charity.
Notice Buddhist compassion has a broader sense than it is usually understood in the Western.
